以前我们村里有一个王老汉，他曾喂了很多只下蛋母鸡，以靠卖这些母鸡下的蛋为生。

有一年的一天晚上，天上没有月亮，外面黑得伸手不见五指。
王老汉由于白天赶集太劳累，就早早地休息了。
到了半夜里，他听到屋外鸡笼子里的鸡不出声地死命扑腾，像是有人捏着鸡脖子在往鸡笼子外面拽。
他以为是黄鼠狼来了，赶紧拿着手电筒和木棍，跑出门外，来到鸡笼子前，他看到鸡笼子旁躺着两只母鸡的，它们的头都被活生生的撕掉了。
奇怪的是，这两只母鸡的尸体都干瘪瘪的，身上没有血了，王老汉看到这种情况，知道这决不是黄鼠狼干的，又究竟是个什么怪物在作怪呢？它为什么光吸食鸡血，不吃鸡肉呢？他心里纳闷不已，准备到第二天晚上再看个究竟。

到第二天晚上，月明星稀，他不敢睡觉，躺在床上，眼睛直盯着窗户，等待着那个怪物来偷母鸡。
又到了半夜里，他听到院子里传来朝鸡笼的方向走去的脚步声，知道那个怪物正朝鸡笼边走去。
他急忙跳下床，来到窗户前，借着朦胧的月光，看到一个模样像狗，却长着四只足像人脚的怪物正爬向鸡笼边，要去抓笼子里的鸡。
看到这里，他一下子被吓蒙了，不由得抖索着咳嗽一声。
它怪物听到他的咳嗽声，也吓得顾不得去抓笼子里的鸡，随即快速地逃走了。

到天亮时，他把昨天夜里看到的怪物告诉了村里的一个见多识广的老人。
那个老人告诉他：“你看到的是人脚獾，有时人脚獾口渴了，也喜欢吸食动物的血，不过它的胆子很小，惧怕成年人，却不怕小孩，小孩若碰到它，可能还会被它吃掉（注：“我童年时就曾遇到过人脚獾，可是由于我怕它，怕得要跪在地上时，它却以为我要拾砖头投它，就吓跑了它），现在它受到你咳嗽的惊吓，就不会再来偷你的鸡了。
”

果然从那以后，人脚獾再也不敢来偷王老汉的母鸡。
