死亡之车“本市最近发生了好几间命案，据说这都是一个从精神病院逃出来的重度精神病患者所为，现在警方正在出动大量人马四处搜寻此人……”电台中播着最新的地方新闻。
米勒太太和他丈夫边开车去杰姆医生的家，边开着车上的无线电。
听到此消息后，两人都心慌起来。
杰姆医生是米勒夫妇的好朋友，今天在他家将举行一个朋友聚会，米勒夫妇正是去赴约的。
杰姆医生家住在郊区，周围都是农地非常荒凉，而要到他家必须穿过一个树林，路很难认，往往会有人在那迷路。
“乔治，这条路好像不对，应该在刚才那棵红杉那儿拐弯。
”米勒太太说。
“是吗，亲爱的，让我来看看地图。
”米勒先生停下车，拿出地图看了起来。
看了一会儿，米勒先生说：“爱玛，你说得没错，我们是应该在那拐弯。

米勒先生下来检查了一下，发现是电频坏了，于是他决定去农场里找人帮忙。
她让妻子待在车里，别出来，可米勒太太一下子想到了刚才那条新闻，害怕一个人留下。
“爱玛，你必须留在车里，就是因为刚才那新闻，我觉得在外面危险，我一个人会快去快回的。
对了，你把车窗都从里反锁起来，人躲到后车座底下，这样从外面就看不出里面有人了。
过会儿不管有什么人敲门你都别开，我若回来了，会敲车顶三声，之后你才开门。

”说晚，米勒先生便离开了。
米勒太太把车窗都锁上后，躲进了后车座底下。
她一人躺在那，觉得好像过了很长时间，她开始担心起她的丈夫来，可她又不敢伸出头去看，她的脑中一直重复着那个令人恐惧的新闻。
又不知过了多久，米勒太太听见车外好像有声响，有人敲车门，而且声音听来很急促。
那会是谁？是乔治吗？不，不对，乔治说过回来了会敲车顶。
难道是那个精神病人？米勒太太胡思乱想起来，自己愈加害怕了。
她蜷起身体，用手捂住了自己的耳朵，想让自己尽量保持平静。
过了会儿，敲门声不见了，随之从车顶传来了很响的撞击声，米勒太太差点吓出声来，但她还是摒住了呼吸，在那接受着她并不想听的声音。
又过了会儿，顶上的敲击声变得缓慢了，而且变得有节奏起来。
“一……二……三”米勒太太在心里数着敲击声，她多希望只听见三声，因为那代表着她的丈夫回来了。
可不幸得是，敲击声继续从车顶传来。
米勒太太一下一下数着，那敲击声会时不时变换它的节奏。
米勒太太也不知是什么时候自己睡着得，等她睁开眼睛时，晨光已透过车窗照射了进来。
车顶的声音依然没有消失，她再也憋不下去了，她决定鼓起勇气出去看看，那到底是什么在车顶发出了一夜的声音。
正在此时，两个警察在车外敲起门来，米勒太太一看赶紧打开车门。
警察看见她叫她先坐在车里别出来，然后拿来一件大衣给她裹上，在两个警察的搀扶下米勒太太走出了汽车。
警察叫她一直走，别回头，但她的好奇心使她急切想看看究竟是什么在自己的头顶上响了一夜。
她还是看了一眼，那是她一辈子也不会忘记的一幕，那是这世上最可怕的一幕。
她看见他丈夫的正被一根麻绳挂在了车旁的一棵树下，而那一夜的响声竟是丈夫的脚拍打车顶所发出的。
