臭虫的智慧

有一桩经历，在谈天说地之际，总喜欢拿出来作为谈资。
可是，一直说了近二十年，都没有人相信，以为是编出来的故事，直到六七年前，在台北，几个人闲谈，又谈及了这件事，只说到前一半，座间一位先生就接了下去，原来他也有同样的经历，证明不是胡说，当晚高兴莫名，只可惜记性不好，只记得这位先生是电影界做美术工作的，尊姓大名，一概不记得了。

那件事发生在南京。
生平只去过一次南京，是。
南京的夏天之热，真是热得无可言喻，绝非香港人所能想像，有中国四大火炉之称的四个城市，南京是其中之一。
火车的时候是，车站出来，上了马车，直赴旅社，一路上，风倒是有风，可惜不是凉风习习，而是热风习习。

到了一家小旅社，人已疲惫不堪，躺在铺上，一面扑蒲扇，一面入睡，汗出如浆，不在话下，但也蒙眬睡去。
睡不多久，忽然全身到处奇痒无比，蒙眬之中，一面抓痒，一面睡。
可是越抓越不对劲，跳起床来，点亮灯一看，只觉遍体生麻，连痒也不觉得了，原来铺上，爬满了臭虫，数量之多，难以形容。
在铺上，一只接一只，恰好排列成了一个人形的平面，人一跳起来，排成的队形散乱，那种丑恶，吸血而又有奇臭的小爬虫，在铺上蠕动，心中所产生的恐惧感，自然也达到了极点。
一面发出的叫声，一面拍打身上的臭虫，落在地板上，就用脚践踏。

小旅馆那有什么隔音设备，这一闹，自然醒了看更人，其中有一个旅客，赠以杀虫粉一包，这种杀虫粉，叫六六六。

有了杀虫粉，看看铺上臭虫会把人抬起来的情形，是无论如何不敢上铺再睡的了，好在地上看来还干净，就清理了一下地板上的死臭虫，把六六六药粉，洒了一大圈，人躺在圈中，观察了一会，臭虫一爬近药粉圈，便不能再前进，确有防虫作用，于是熄灯，以为可以安睡了。

谁知，到了蒙眬睡去之际，全身又是奇痒难当。
药粉明明有防止臭虫侵入的作用，为何又会到处被咬呢？跳起来再着灯一看，不禁整个人都呆住了，简直不能相信自己的眼睛。

每当讲这件事，讲到这里，总会停下来问听的人：你们猜一猜，我看到了什么情景。

总是没有人猜得出来，也总是揭晓了看到了的情形，也没有人肯深信。

直到遇到了那位先生，他接了下去，他说的，就是我当时所看到的。

他说：我知道，你看到臭虫列着队，沿着墙脚，爬上墙壁，然后，转到天花板上，到了你身子的上面，再跌落下来，跌进药粉圈中，它们不必冲过药粉圈，用这个方法，一样可以接近你，吸你的血！

一点也不错，情形真是如此。
这真是不可思议之至，那片如纸薄的昆虫，为了生存，竟会有如此高的智慧！而且，昆虫在粗糙的平面上，可以附着身子，可是到了上空，它怎知道放松脚上的力量，使得身子向下落来呢？当灯点着时，墙上，天花板上的臭虫行列，还正浩浩荡荡，一只只臭虫，还不断从天花板上落下来，正确无误地落在药粉圈中间！

自然，一晚没有再睡，临走，找了一个小瓶子，捉了五只特别肥大，才吸饱了血的，放进瓶中，塞上塞子，想看看它的生态。
但不久就浑忘了这件事，大约在一年之后，忽然发现了这只瓶子，看到瓶中有几片小小的灰白色透明的薄片，如皮肤屑然，一时之间，还想不起那是什么东西来。

打开瓶塞，把那几片薄片倒出来，薄片由于太轻，是飘下来，而不是落下来的，其中有两片，飘落在手背之上，像是魔术师在施展高超的手法一样，眼看着那两片薄片，在不到三十秒的时间内，由白而红，开始膨胀，从平面迅速变成立体，臭虫，在一年多之后，它们还活着，一有机会，立刻又恢复了它吸血的本能！

在目定口呆之后，心中恐惧之极，觉得人的生命力，和臭虫简直无法相比，神经质地大叫了起来，把那五只臭虫，都弄成了粉末，可是心头余悸，至今犹存！

臭虫，江南各地皆有，南京特多，日本人称之为南京虫。
广东也有，别名木蝨，早期香港戏院中都有，但现在似乎越来越少了。

臭虫，又名床蝨，在生物学的分类上，是昆虫纲，半翅目，异翅亚目，臭虫科的生物，靠吸取热血动物的血液为生。
在依靠吸血为生的昆虫之中，臭虫不算是最可怕的一种，也不是最温和的一种，介乎中间。

另外几种可怕或更温和的吸血昆虫，也曾有和它们打交道的经验，自然，我会再讲。
